Mexican Muralism began in the 1920s. It was headed up by three painters, Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros. These artists promoted mural paintings generally with a social or political message in the effort to reunify the country under the post Mexican Revolution government. These masterpieces can be viewed across various locations in Mexico City – Palacio de Bellas Artes, Palacio Nacional and Museo Mural Diego Rivera to name a few.
Another renowned Mexican artist whose work is worth viewing in Mexico is Frida Kahlo. Her artwork mostly consists of painted self-portraits and can be viewed at the Frida Kahlo museum in Coyoacan.
But enough with the history lesson. The street murals was what I was after. I was lucky enough to stumble across a few superb ones. Spotted these in La Roma, Coyoacan and Guerrera.
